ESTASI

“Estasi” is a work by Wim Henderickx for mixed choirs, soprano solo, bass solo, and optional electronics. The premiere took place on June 11, 2017, at St. Peter’s Church in Ghent by Ars Vocalis Kortrijk & De 2de Adem under the direction of Diederik Glorieux and Maarten Van Ingelgem. The solo parts were performed by Tineke Van Ingelgem, soprano and Wilfried Van den Brande, bass-baritone.

“Estasi” consists of 7 parts:

Prologue: Sacred Time
Ecstasy 1: Darkness
Interlude 1: Song of Memories
Ecstasy 2: Fire (Passion)
Ecstasy 3: Light (Goodness)
Interlude 2: Song of Compassion
Epilogue: Sacred Space

The inspiration for the text was a verse from the Latin Requiem Mass, the ‘Lux Aeterna’. The original text was deconstructed and has no semantic value, but the essence, the message of Light and Hope, is very clearly present in this work. This message is embodied in most cultures and religions. Much of Henderickx’s work draws inspiration from the East, but this work is set in a broader spiritual context. The electronics serve to support the choirs but also interact with the voices.
